The War on Pain Medication

Warning for those of sensitive sensibility.  There will be foul language.

So, the junior Senator from New York, Kristine Gillibrand had this to say (and let me just cheer Dr. Gorski’s response):

54419098_2043205179068320_6910136770449375232_n

“Nobody needs a month’s supply for a wisdom tooth extraction.”

Thank you, Dr. Gillibrand.  May I ask where you studied medicine?  Where you served your internship and residency?  Or is it from a position of dentistry where you make this ex cathedra pronouncement?  Please, tell me by what authority you make pronouncements on appropriate care for pain management?

Oh, wait a minute.  According to your Wikipedia page, you studied law, not medicine.  Nowhere in there is a medical or dental school even mentioned.  You’re not even a medical school dropout.  You’re a “never were.” And yet, you speak with such confidence on a medical (or dental in this case) matter.

Nobody needs a month’s supply for a wisdom tooth extraction?  Well, maybe, provided there are no complications.  Are you familiar with all the possible complications that might occur in the aftermath of oral surgery such as extracting impacted wisdom teeth?  I’m not.  And I seriously doubt you are either.  And extracting wisdom teeth is not the only, and certainly not the worst, pain issue that patients and their doctors might have to deal with.  But you still feel justified in mocking them with your flippant little comment?

There are other things than wisdom teeth that require serious pain management you addlepated twatwaffle. (Readers:  I did warn you).  What in the coldest reaches of Niflehel makes you think you know what’s best for those patients, you disgusting collection of rotting entrails?  How about letting the fucking doctors and their fucking patients make the fucking decisions, you vomitous mass of diseased filth?

I wouldn’t accept “just take a couple aspirin” from that vile scumsack that was the former US Attorney General, and I won’t accept it from you, you putrescent meatsuit.  Pain, hurts, in case you in your sheltered little life have never encountered it.  Chronic pain in particular can drive people to despair such that it kills. I’d say “get that through your head” except I’m pretty sure that your head is totally impervious to anything resembling facts or logic.

If we simply leave it up to the doctors and their patients will people use opioids when they should not leading to overdoses and death?  Yes.  However, your policy taking the decision out of doctors who have their patients’ interest at heart, and putting it in the hands of people who’ve never seen the inside of a medical school–people like you, you cowbrained lickspittle–will cause far more pain and suffering, far more death than addiction to and accidental overdoses of prescription medicines ever can.  If prescription drug abuse were a cold, you’d be the fucking plague–pneumonic form (have someone look that up for you and explain it in small words, you tinheaded snotrag).

You are a greater evil than all the prescription drug abuse from Hippocrates to the present day combined.

    1. Spinal fusions left me sweating and shaking from pain. I was also addicted after these fusions and years on morphine between surgeries. I had great doctors and was weaned off medications at my insistence. I needed the pain medication, without it during those years would have caused me to give up on life. 7 days supply is a joke
To those that suffer. I am free of medications and do not regret one minute, even with addiction the years I had to use them.

        1. Well I agree. I’ve had 13….yes that’s right 13 back surgeries, 1 knee surgery, 1 neck surgery, 1 hernia repair and dental surgery…but that was when docs had no problem giving you a month script for 120 lortabs or oxycodones…now they tell ya to take 2 Tylenol and suck it up. Now I am beginning to have minor liver problem from saying, “doc, the Tylenol not working,”. Doc says, “well take more” thanks doc. AND Hildebrand too.

      1. I must ask if you’re talking about your being addicted to, or dependent on morphine or other opioid medication. Were you taking it as prescribed to cope with pain or were you taking it not just for pain but to get high, and did your being aware of that prompt you to cease the medication of your own volition ? The difference is night and day and the very basis of why people can’t tell one from the other. I’m glad you’re able to be off your meds but many people, myself included, have been forced to wean back their dose with nothing offered to begin to help the pain that’s no longer being addressed. Until legislators understand what chronic pain is and the difference between dependence and addiction, they don’t have a right to speak or call us addicts for taking opioids as prescribed to cope with chronic pain.

        1. “Addiction” is often used in two different manners. The most commonly-seen usage is to describe someone who is seeking to alter his mental state when there is no direct need for such activity.

The other usage (which is the original meaning) is a medical term, meaning that a person’s body chemistry has changed such that it now REQUIRES the presence of the drug in order to function correctly. Some drugs can be used on a regular basis without becoming addicted, and a few cannot. Once someone is addicted, however, stopping use all at once can be highly dangerous, and even fatal, because, as I said, their body now requires the drug for normal functioning. This is most likely what Ms Neill was referring to, rather than merely being dependent on the medicine to lower her pain to functional levels.

    3. Dr Gorski is not a credit to his profession – this kind of language is both undesirable and unnecessary in making ones point of view known. His opinion on this issue is one I share, his vile verbal abuse is
alarming and just an alternative way of creating pain and suffering!

      1. DR GORSKI’S vile verbal abuse? WHERE???

If, on the other hand, you were talking about the blog host’s language: it’s his site. If he were speaking directly to Gillibrand, then you might, MIGHT have a modicum of a point, because many times harsh language turns off people’s hearing of the more relevant content. However, given the total brandead nature of the Senator’s statements, it’s unlikely that she would gain anything from a less vehement discussion, either, so pft.

    4. I totally agree with leaving pain management up to the Dr and their patients. I suffer with chronic pain from rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. With the new laws my drs dont write my pain meds anymore. I’ve been on pain medication for years. It was my way to have some kind of quality of life. I use to coach kids basketball, football, go fishing, to family functions, work part time, and do all the things a person would do in life. Know with no meds, I just lay around depressed all the time cause I hurt to bad to even move. By the way I’m a veteran that proudly served, and the va wont even give me the meds, that they started me on. Its frustrating , what are chronic pain people to do. I’ve tried other treatments like acupuncture, creams, meditation, talking to Pyschologist, social workers, numerous of other treatments, nothing works. Just pain medication works.

I’m a veteran I got hurt in the army back in the 80s all my pain was under control until about three years ago . Now they’ve taken me completely off all my pain meds.. and I can’t even function to go outside .
What is it going to take to get some compassion and empathy in this Country . I don’t think any beach people that are criticizing the pain medications I’ve ever been at a level 10 or in their life . On the scale from 1 to 10 I live at about 15 to 20 constantly now it’s unbelievable I don’t know how long I can . Bair it !
      Chronic pain is no joke

    7. The war on opioids is pretty unfair. You can not lump people with pain. In a group like that. My husband suffer with chronic pain and has admitted to being dependent. He also would like to be able to get out of bed and have somewhat of a life and the opioids helped him. But because of our “war” he any many like him are being lumped. He is not homeless or committing crimes to get pain meds. He is not hurting anyone.some Doctors and parmicutical companys are trying to cover there buts. The real doctors that are not judging and truly trying to help still believe that opioids help in some case. Yes I agree you dont need a month of pills for theet removal. And i agreed alot of procedures dont need alot of pain meds. But people that are terminally Ill and chronic pain need to be helped and it needs to be addressed. That is where it is up to the doctor to fully explain what these opioid can do and to do their jobs an monitor people on short term use. Not punish people that depend on a way to help them get thur their pain with dignity! I have watched what it has done to my husband physically, emotionally and his all around well being. The doctor we have had had him back and forth on everything and if he even thinks about having one beer he gets taken off. He had to sign a contract. How and now his doctor controls him. It really is kind of sick that a grown man can not choose how he wants to live his life. The contract shouldnt ge thst the doctor controls your life. The contract should be that you are RESPONSIBLE for all and any of your actions while on these drugs. More education and doctors that really want to help. The doctors comment that they the itsnot helping only making it harder to treat their patients! My husband is close to suicide most odthetime tryi g to deal with his pain. I’m appalled at how these politician stand on their podiums and are clueless.

    8. I have chronic pain and I am taking opioids as well as meds to control nerve pain. With out these meds I would not be able to function at all. As with being on these meds I am able to be mostly independent. My wife does alot to help but I am able to manage while she at work.
She loves her job and is not ready to retire or quit. If opioids are not available, not only will I be rob of a somewhat life it would also put my wife in a difficult situation.
Let the real Doctors decide who should be on pain meds and how much the patient needs. Do not add more punishment to the the people living in pain because of others. The people who want to abuse drugs will find other drugs to abuse. This will not solve the problem.

    9. I have chronic pain as I get older it gets worse pain. In 1990 I was run over by a Rail Road car which tore up my back and neck. The pain never went away, I now have had 8 knee surgeries the last two created more pain and less mobility. I have been forced to drug treatment for my pain problem at the Va. I have never had a problem with the meds kept to the doseage.Last week i went to meet my new “doctor” at the va he said wow you have had a lot of injuries and your back is all messed up as well as your knees. he sain you have high Blood Pressure yes its because of the pain . It happens every time I reduce or stop meds because pain gets out of control. So he was gonn prescribe high blood pressure pills for pain reaction.I asked why I was being sent to drug rehab for my chronic pain, he did not answer. I said he violated his oath , he was causing harm. He said I dont believe I am causing harm he said. . So the Va continues to taper me off which has never worked before. Now with the pain my BP is tripples top and bottom , I ams sweatting bullets, stomach, pain, insomnia. Ya withdrawels are so fun!

    1. Now, now, let’s keep it in the vein of the comment being dissected: Let’s see how she does with an impacted wisdom tooth that has too much infection for them to safely extract it, so that she has to take antibiotics for two weeks before it can even BE extracted, in such pain she can barely eat during that entire time, THEN the pain of recovering from the removal. And why don’t we throw in getting Dry Socket afterwards, just for good measure?

(Had to mash together one of my experiences with one of my younger son’s there, but they could easily happen together)

      1. Day-yamn, I got Really Lucky way Back When.. impacted, surgically extracted, ‘scrip for codeine… that I didn’t need. Found out later, ’twas just as well. Seems I metabolize the stuff at a rate that it’s useless for me – no painkilling, no loopiness or “high”, no effect beyond “that’s expensive urine.”

        1. Mine wasn’t a wisdom tooth, I just used that as an example, but when I went in for one of my molars causing me enough pain I could hardly eat, the dentist said I had an infected are in my jawbone that was the size of a nickel. Gave me a two week scrip for Amoxicillin and Vicodin before he would touch it, because of the danger of the infection spreading when the tooth was removed.

Younger son had the dry socket after wisdom tooth extraction. He said it was very painful.

    2. Absolutely. She’s a fraud overall as her latest ideas and opinions are based on what direction the wind is blowing and how she can get the most power. She’s a low life politician but when she tries to destroy life by banning the very thing that literally keeps me from wanting to leave the earth due to a miserable life of pain, then I want to break her back myself and let her sit there with no relief from pain medication. She’s a total piece of shit. Always has been but with this is times 10,000!

However said having said that I agree with you that twatwaffle has absolutely no right to tell people what to do and to judge their limits on what they can tolerate. Curses on her black twisted soul.

    1. Totally disagree with you! You’re wrong. Live with my level of pain without my pain medication and then we’ll see how utterly pissed you would get when a total ignorant dumb self righteous power hungry piece of shit wants to destroy my life with pain all because of her pandering and ignorance. Fuck her. The tone of this article is exactly how I and many many people feel so please don’t tell us how we should feel or talk until you have my back pain and you hear someone wants to make my life a total waste of living without the relief I get from MEDICINE!! Frankly I find your comment to be extremely self righteous and ignorant as well. You have no right to tell people how frustrated to be with a complete fucking moron politician like her! You come across almost as clueless as she does to tell us how to talk when our lives are already destroyed by pain but having medication literally prevents me from suicide attempts! Literally! So get off your high horse of “no swearing please” childish language policing. The author is 100% dead on in his outrage and how he (and I) need to voice it to get the attention and care we deserve as human beings!

    2. Gillibrand’s comments were so colossally brain-dead that any degree of profanity is warranted.

Plus, it’s tacky to show up at someone’s personal website and lecture them about their language. Were it mine, I’d tell you to go and perform anatomically unlikely sexual acts upon your own person.

Collapsed both lungs and punctured one lung 2 places. Dislocated shoulder. And shattered my pelvis 19 places on the right collapsed left side of my pelvis. 21 years and 3 back 1 neck surgery later still in tears every day without pain meds I would kill myself.

  5. I suffer from chronic pain due to spinal stenosis, it is horrible. I would not wish this even on the moronic idiots who think a aspirin is all a person needs for pain relief. Why not compare opioid deaths to alcohol related deaths. There will be people to will abuse, but there are far more people who need pain medication just to survive the day/night.

  6. What an awful woman. She needs to just shut her pie hole. Get off the bandwagon of “opioids bad” and drop the damned pitchfork. Chronic pain sufferers legitimately need these meds to lead better lives. We don’t need the condescension and accusations of being junkies. Please help, don’t hinder.

  8. As a long time sufferer of osteoarthritis, I am in constant pain all over in all of my joints, to the degree that I can hardly get out of bed in the morning after a sleepless night of agony, yet I still have to work a full-time job because I have been denied any invalidity benefits; if I didn’t have access to some kind of painkillers every day I would quite literally go out and kill myself! The idea that some idiot who probably never suffered any pain stronger than a tooth extraction should have the right to deny chronic pain sufferers like me the only thing that keeps us alive and relatively sane is unbearable!

    1. If you’ve been denied SSDI I strongly advise you to get a lawyer. Many people think they can’t afford one to file for SSDI when in reality, the lawyer is by law only able to charge a certain percentage of your first check. Google it and see. If you file and are denied, it is much more work to file again or go for hearings which may not go in your favor.

  9. I have lupus, fibromyalgia, neuropathy , stage 3 kidney failure and every host of disorder and disease that follow. Now instead of getting my pain medication from my Rheumatologist, I have to go to a pain management dr. Where I sign a contract that I will take my medication as prescribed, not buy any, sell any erc. I take a UA at least every other month. Now my pain management dr has me taking epidurals in my spine, which now Im learning is dangerous. I had weight loss surgery and told my pain management dr that i had run out of my medication due to pain, he said, I would like to remind you about the contract u sign, you should never take more than what is prescribed. It is insane. Educate patients and educate doctors and allow the drs to do their jobs. There will always be people scamming, doing things illegal etc but it will keep innocent people in chronic pain from turning to drug dealers looking for relief and instead end up dying.

As far as the JUNIOR senator’s suggestion I’m quiet certain though I’m not a doctor her symptoms of ignorance, vision problems , hearing issues and the biggest sumptom is Ego, which is very apparent, she may be suffering from a serious disorder that is very contagious, commonly referred to Cerebral Rectal Inversion.
